Hillsborough Castle & Gardens in Northern Ireland is usually closed on Tuesdays, but we got in thanks to a private guided tour.
I don’t have photos of the interiors because photography wasn’t allowed, but what I can share is that the house is furnished with very modern pieces and decorated with recent, unpublished photos of the Royal Family. That’s because Hillsborough Castle is still a working royal residence. When members of the Royal Family visit Northern Ireland — such as King Charles III, Queen Camilla, or William and Catherine — they stay here. Perhaps that also explains why cameras were off-limits inside.
What I loved about this “castle” experience was that we were actually allowed to sit on the royal sofas and lounge like guests. Unlike other castles in Ireland that are staged like period sets, with ropes keeping you at a distance, Hillsborough felt like visiting a real family home that’s actually lived in.
The house itself opens out onto sprawling gardens, which, to me, were even more enjoyable than the interiors. We were graciously given private time to explore, and it was surreal — just me, my fiancé, and the occasional groundskeeper going about their work. At our own pace, we wandered acres of tree-lined walkways and manicured lawns.

We lay on the grass for a quick picnic, felt the wind through towering trees, watched leaves drift down, and strolled past the fountain, the small lake, and the endless paths. I loved everything about it!
It was a privilege and an amazing one-of-a-kind experience to be there on a Tuesday when it’s normally closed. Empty gardens, no tourist chatter, only peace and quiet for us two.
If you ever find yourself on this side of Northern Ireland, I can’t recommend Hillsborough Castle & Gardens enough. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic day out.
We Hopped Aboard the Titanic at Belfast!
Just kidding. We actually explored the Titanic Museum in Belfast. 😅
But to be fair, Titanic Belfast is built right on the spot where the RMS Titanic was designed, engineered, and launched. Yes, the Titanic was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland! I just wanted to put that out there because some people assume it was…
Trim Castle: Our First Adventure in Ireland!
I am so excited to finally write about our Ireland adventures! When I told my friends and family where we were headed next, a lot of them looked at me like I was out of my mind. 🤣
They said Ireland tends to appeal more to older travelers looking for relaxed, cultural experiences rather than…
Osborne House on the Isle of Wight: The Most Homey Royal Home I’ve Ever Visited
There’s something unique about Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s beloved summer home on the Isle of Wight, that makes it feel like an actual home compared to other royal houses I’ve visited in the UK and Ireland.
This one has more personality. It feels like someone from the royal family actually handpicked the objects inside and…
