In trying to make my life more efficient, I forgot one simple fact: not everything needs to have a clear purpose.
I spent much of the last week of 2025 and the first week of 2026 thinking about what I could get rid of. The end goal being, to only keep and focus more on the things that actually matter.
Every year, I do some version of this. It’s like an annual Marie Kondo moment: What brings you joy? But in my case, the question becomes, What is still useful to me at this stage of my life? I say goodbye to things that no longer serve me and keep only what I can clearly define as useful.
But that’s where it gets tricky.
Because this year-end, year-beginning ritual revolves so heavily around assigning purpose, I sometimes overthink it. I forget that we CAN keep things — material or otherwise — just because. Not everything needs a higher or clearly defined role in our lives. Sometimes, something stays simply because you don’t know what to do with it yet. And if that’s the reason, then that’s reason enough.
I think, in writing this, I’m reminding myself — and you — to not overthink.
If there’s something in your life you’re unsure about letting go of, don’t pressure yourself to get rid of it. You don’t have to decide right now. Let it be and maybe, in time, the reason you held on will reveal itself.
No matter how stressful this may sound to people (like me) who plan their life and future down to the T, let us acknowledge this relevant lesson: not everything reveals its purpose immediately.
So don’t act if you don’t have to. Enjoy the things you can, and let be the things you don’t need to mind. For now. 🙂
Taro Plants: Developments in the Supply Chain
I know the title is weird right now, so let me explain.
An hour ago, I was watching the latest episode of Chief of War on Apple TV, where Kamehameha was teaching the kids about ‘oha, the offshoot of the taro plant, and how that word is at the root (literally and figuratively) of ‘ohana,…
An Open Letter to Travelers Who Love the World as Much as I Do
A dear friend who recently conquered med school is now discovering the joys of traveling. He’s been hopping from country to country, spending a few days at most in each, and sending me photos of his wild adventures.
While I am happy for him, ultimately we had to have a chat, especially after he mentioned…
11 Blessings of Modern Life: A Woman’s Perspective
I know it sometimes feels like guilt to acknowledge your blessings. Because the moment you become aware of how good you have it, you can’t unsee how many others don’t.
But you know what? In these times, when opening the news feels like bracing for another wave of bad headlines, I want to offer a…
